I had to power off and restart. On checking msconfig, only some of the changes were made, while some services seemed to go missing altogether, like my Toshiba HDD Protection, so I have abandoned this approach for now.

I am now wondering if this is a virus, or disk or Registry corruption. It certainly is not listed on my system. I'm also getting some System Errors now which need investigating.
