Downloaded antivirus that said it was compatible with vista but threw it into startup repair at restart. Cannot get in safe mode cannot remove program and windows vista cd doesn't repair it either. No system restore points available. I would like to help repair system without losing all files. Please help have no idea what to do. Wish I could just remove the downloaded program that I think started it all but cannot get there.
Any help would be appreciated thank you. I have the same question 0. SoulAsylum Guru Norton Fighter Reg: Mar Thank you I will read carefully and post if I get resolution! Initial google searches suggested it might be corrupted OS files and a checkdisk would fix it. It would still hang up. I started Windows off my recovery disk, had it do a repair. I thought I was home free, I used Internet explorer, defragged hard drive, closed and opened things. It seemed like everything was fine, so I tried to reinstall my Kaspersky, which was going fine right up until the last sliver of the installation bar and then it froze.
I was able to run some diagnostics from BIOS and got the status 78 hard disk error, which google searches said it was a sign the HD is going or already gone. So my question is : Is this just a hardware issue? Will a new HD fix it, or is there a problem with my windows?
My important files were backed up, so losing the old drive is not a big deal. Please help me solve this problem. This thread is locked. In reply to Rick Rogers's post on February 3, Thanks very much for your suggestion. If it is a damaged installation as you said, wouldn't it have happened earlier? But I appreciate it.
Diana D. In reply to TroubleInviter's post on February 3, Hi, I would suggest that you run startup repair on the computer using the Vista DVD and check if it works. Hi, Damaged installations resulting from file corruption can happen any time. Windows vista had known issues where you couldn't repair and had to do a complete OS reinstall. I would use ultimate boot cd or the bios hard drive diagnostics to make sure the disk isn't going bad, then I would back up your data by using the enclosure you have, and reinstall.
David: Doh! I did not try that and I probably should before doing anything else. I'll try that first tonight. Philip: I was already beginning to suspect that you are right: that the system needs to use something that is on the original disc to repair that it can't find on the HDD.
I have heard of hirens but to be honest have never needed to use it. I'll check it out if I can't get anywhere with David's suggestion. Steve: Sorry forgot to mention I did a dell bios diagnostic run as well everything was ok. I'll check again later, but I believe F8 while giving me several options does not give me a factory reset. The only factory reset option I saw is in the vista repair menu and as I stated before it never completes.
I saw the title of this thread and got all excited to say that the problem was Vista Anyhow, I doubt the HDD itself is bad. Generally, you would get a read error if it was or somesuch. Try single memory sticks at a time if you have multiple, or known working ones.
I had this problem with a PC freezing on "Windows is loading files Twas a bad memory stick. I think it even passed the dell diagnostics.
