The end result is a game that, detached from playing it, has a story that is artistic and interesting. We have characters that we think we know, acting in ways that surprise us.
As someone that has followed this franchise religiously for several decades, this is something that still bothers me whenever I think about it. I love it for what it is, and hate it for how it makes me feel. It was signposted a mile away. That was the post that led to the creation of the Never Be Game Over subreddit. That was alongside aimlessly signing petitions asking for the game to be re-released in a more sensible state the phantom pain is real.
Tweets from Konami and Kojima were twisted into evidence. Mission 51 too. Pig Boss? On his jacket is a pig's head with an eyepatch. Pig Boss. BlueJester 6 years ago 7. Did you like my sunglasses?
It could also be a reference to something Liquid said to Ocelot, in the underground base control room, in MGS1: "If we nuke a major population center, the game's over. Anyone have a video of MGS1 in Japanese? Just looking for the tunnel chase with Liquid. Might help if "It's not over yet!
Elemayowe 6 years ago WingZero posted And the 'accident' Miller informs you of where a pipe fell and killed a boy named Ralph. It may not seem that innovative and special at first, but consider that it was the first of its kind. Most of us computer gamers are jaded to a certain extent, that's to say we crave complexity.
Fortunately, Metal Gear Solid offers a certain degree of sophistication, found in its ability to force players into using stealth. Metal Gear Solid has quite a strong tradition on the console, first found on the Nintendo and more recently the Playstation. In a somewhat revolutionary move, Metal Gear Solid for the Playstation forced players into using stealth tactics rather than just running around mindlessly, killing anything and everything in sight.
The creation of Metal Gear Solid spawned a completely new action gaming sub genre, a group that includes games like Rainbow Six. Every now and then, we in the gaming community are presented with a pathetic excuse for a video game, a console port. However, despite all the limitations of the late 80s hardware, Metal Gear was already a game ahead of its time, both from a gameplay and storytelling perspective. On top of that, it was also added to the Wii Virtual Console.
Three years after the original game, a direct sequel was released, and it was named after the protagonist himself. It was also developed mainly for the MSX2 and is largely similar to the first installment, both in terms of mechanics and plot.
The most notable addition that enhanced the stealth-centric experience was the introduction of sound as a stealth factor. Enemies could now hear the player, requiring them to use firearms sparingly and make thorough use of the new prone position. On top of that, enemies could also hear noise and come rushing in from off-screen, which meant more serious consequences for breaking stealth.
The very first 3D game that would come to define the rest of the series — the one and only Metal Gear Solid. While the game did not take full advantage of the third dimension seeing as it mostly sticks to the familiar overhead perspective , it did make great strides in the storytelling department. Metal Gear Solid 2 faced a fair share of controversy upon release because of the way it replaced Solid Snake with a new protagonist — Raiden — who was the polar opposite of the gruff and experienced veteran that the players were used to.
A big part of the fan outrage also stemmed from the fact that all pre-release material prominently featured Snake, with no hint whatsoever that the game would be featuring a new protagonist.
It shifted the focus to philosophical and existential issues, as opposed to the mere political fiction that the series was built upon before. From a technical standpoint, MGS 2 also introduced greatly improved graphics and more polished gameplay, although the clunky first-person aiming felt shoehorned into some of the boss fights. The game was originally released for the PlayStation 2 but was also ported to the original Xbox and Windows in the form of Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance.
Ask a veteran Metal Gear fan what their favorite game in the entire franchise is, and the answer will most likely be Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. For the very first time, we found ourselves in the combat boots of none other than Big Boss himself, or rather, Naked Snake, as he is called at this point in the timeline. Snake Eater took a step back from the existential themes of MGS2, focusing more on political fiction and the Cold War, featuring a very character-heavy story.
Gameplay-wise, it added camouflage, advanced melee combat, and even some survival elements.
